Let us journey through the weird and the wonderful. Our world has plenty of both.

Places to visit with caution

Places to visit with caution

Call it morbid curiosity or directly disobeying your psychologists orders, most of us have a certain sick fascination for things we should stay away from. When we’re told to stay away from the cookie jar, we will make it a mission to get those sacred cursed damned confectionaries from hell. So nobody is stopping you form visiting these places, you’re just being warned that should you choose to test your mortality and take a trip there might as well acknowledge, understand, accept and appreciate that these are places to visit with caution;

  • The Afar Triangle, Ethiopia

The name of this region was probably given as an indicator to how close you should stand to it. In scientific fancy talk, it is said that the tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust started rifting triggering recurring earthquakes and hundreds of metres long fissures in a place in Ethiopia. In normal human language that means at any time a gaping hole will open up following an earthquake, breathing dragon air with the sound of rumbling magma in its belly. If you want to visit what is probably Mother Nature’s wrath upon humans, good luck to you. Just make sure you’ve at least washed off your sins.

  • The Bolton Strid, Yorkshire

Bolton Strid

The worst thing about the Bolton Strid is how serene and inviting it looks. It’s not. The Strid is about 6 feet across, and looks like a place you should jump rocks to get to the other side. You shouldn’t. What you should do is consider this as one of the places to visit with caution. The narrow gap of the river is to lure you in like a gullible fool looking for a fun adventure but once you go in, you’re not getting out. Nobody knows just how deep the river is because of a series of hidden caverns and tunnels that hold much of the rivers water in addition to the fact that the river is seriously undercut, but the thing is a death trap and it says as much on the millions of warning signs you’ll come across strolling on the bank of the Strid.

  • Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Bromo Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Yogyakarta is a humble town on the island of Java, Indonesia, right next to an active volcano. That might not sound like the brightest idea for those who actually like to live, but a staggering 120 million Javanese people are settled there, knowing full well that this is one of the places to visit with caution. Yogyakarta is ruled under traditional Hindu monarchy, and the people there worship the mountain as a God, which honestly sounds like a smart thing to do. But they don’t just do it because the hulking mountain may kill them any time it damn well pleases, but also because as a payment for all those human sacrifices, the excretions of the volcano are the best fertiliser and that basically helps the people flourish.

  • Chuuk Lagoon

Chuuk lagoon

The Chuuk Lagoon, also known as Truk Lagoon, is quite possibly the biggest shipyard grave in the world. In the after math of World War II, when the U.S navy launched an attack on the Japanese Army lead to thousands of soldiers dying, who were then buried in the water along with much of their artillery. Divers, with the gut system made of reinforced steel, are free to explore the giant burial ground and up to forty ships but with the condition that nothing be touched. That is because the site still contains live munitions that can be set off at any time, and about million tons of crude oil that can potentially destroy the marine life and all it holds dear. Fun times to be had.
