What’s more appealing? Lounging on satin sheets overlooking the tropical seas or walking through dirt worn paths and smacking down mosquitoes biting places you thought never could be bitten. What’s that you say? Dozing on your grandmothers’ threadbare atrocious looking couch and watching Netflix with vacant eyes and eating 3 day old leftovers? True. But when you have a partner vacation is an elusive privilege meant to be taken advantage of, and though binge watching Game of Thrones can be quite a bonding experience, there’s something to be said about the experience of exploring the world together with your other half. There are numerous overlooked reasons as to how backpacking can be more romantic than lazing in luxurious retreats.
Now, most people choose to fly to islands like Fiji or other luxurious retreats for a romantic getaway using more than half their life savings and selling at least one kidney on the black market. But you’re not most people, are you? You super special snowflake, you. No, to be truly romantic and show your partner that you’re not some cliché and to redeem yourself of your shortcomings like the time you accidentally spilled champagne on them during a date which was one goddamned time, do something different, something new, take them to explore the world with you by their side. Show them how backpacking can be more romantic than lazing in luxurious retreats and that you are one hell of a suave, slick catch.
“Is there anyway how backpacking can be more romantic than lazing in luxurious retreats?” you ask. Or you don’t actually, however, all your non-questions shall be answered young padawan. It’s important to understand what backpacking even is. It is basically independent inexpensive travelling where you choose to live out of your backpack. It isn’t nearly as cheap as you’d expect, but you wouldn’t need to sell any organs. It is, however, as uncomfortable as you’d expect and then some. Backpacking may be trekking through the wilderness or discovering a whole new culture with nothing but your handy bag, force of will and the internet. And money, lots of money. Let’s not forget the money.
The thing is though, while it’s nice to be able to forget about bills and deadlines for a while and just relax on the most predictable romantic spots, with soft beds and fancy wines, one of the drawbacks of being an adult can be how adult responsibilities can sneak up on you when your mind is idle. Backpacking gives you this kind of exclusive opportunity to learn together, explore together, and maybe indulge together. Where on one hand you get unhindered raw views and experiences like Asian massages, you also learn about each other. You learn to solve problems together, you learn to face fears and leave your comfort zones together, you learn to compromise, to trust, you learn what your partner smells like after 3 days on the road. You learn where your priorities lie. And while these things to uncover themselves with time when you’re in for the long haul in a relationship, it’s just better when accompanied by the views of the Amazon or the massage tables of Shangri-La. And when you’re dangling with a cord off the corner of a cliff, with the soles of your feet cracked and hands callused, you look over your shoulder to the person dumb enough to be risking their lives with you, laughing through the adrenalin and decide this is why you chose to do this. This is how backpacking can be more romantic than lazing in luxurious retreats.
